Study Abroad and Expand Your Perspective

Take part in an engaging educational experience that encourages your personal, social, and intellectual growth. The Study Abroad and Study Away programs at Âé¶čapp provide opportunities for you to fulfill your general education requirements or enhance the coursework in your major while exploring the world and gaining a greater understanding, appreciation, and respect for our dynamic global community.

Travel-based courses are currently offered during the Winterim term in January, in the Spring semester over Spring Break, and in the Summer.

Amsterdam & Antwerp (FDES 280)

Spring: March 15 – 22, 2025

Fashion Study Aboard to Amsterdam and Antwerp. This course will introduce students to the international fashion market through a new lens. Dutch fashion brands don’t follow trends, they create them because they are constantly evolving. And that’s why Amsterdam is and will always be the ultimate subversive fashion city. Antwerp is frequently referred to as the origin of the “Antwerp Six” and has a long history in fashion. Six cutting-edge fashion designers made their debut in the 1980s and immediately became well-known around the world for their ground-breaking and avant-garde designs. Both cities are known for their sustainability efforts, including the Fashion for Good museum in Amsterdam that showcases the past, present, and future of sustainable fashion and highlights designers who are making sustainable fashion a reality.

Lyon, France (INBUS 355/MGT 355/MKT 355)

Spring: March 14 – 21, 2025

Are you interested in learning how businesses manage and market their products and brands differently based on the country of origin? Then join us in Lyon, France and get the chance to observe business decision-making from a European perspective! Experience international management and international marketing first-hand by touring companies like Sodexo, furniture manufacturer Ligne Roset, and the Olympique Lyonnais Groupe’s professional football stadium. Finally, experience all Lyonnaise culture has to offer with a culinary street food tour, a visit to the Musee De L’Illusion, and a trip to the famed Beaujolais vineyards.

Puerto Rico (SVC 101)

Spring: March 15 – 22, 2025

Interested in food insecurity? What do you know about agriculture in Puerto Rico? SVC 101: Foundations of Service Learning will spend Spring Break 2025 in San Juan, Puerto Rico and the surrounding areas to learn about the issues impacting food security on this beautiful, tropical island. Students will understand the social issues surrounding food production, the impact of natural disasters, and the challenges and opportunities that nonprofits working in the region are facing.

Spain (ART 280)

Spring: March 14 – 25, 2025

This travel photography course in Spain offers students an opportunity to advance their photography skills while exploring and observing Barcelona, Madrid, and the surrounding areas. Students will photograph historic and contemporary landmarks, develop narrative techniques through the exploration of street and nature photography, and engage with the creative culture of Spain. Upon returning, students will create photo books and curate an exhibition of images from the trip.

South Korea (HIST 211)

Summer: July 21 – 31, 2025

Mega K-pop groups like BTS and BlackPink and the popularity of Korean food, webtoons, K-dramas, and Korean cinema represent just a fraction of the global phenomena known as the “Korean Wave” (“Hallyu”). Hallyu is a recent expression of the long, rich history and culture of Korea. Students will learn about Korean culture, history, and pop-culture, as well as the basics of the Korean language as they prepare for a full immersion experience in Korea in summer 2025! We’ll visit Seoul, Busan, and Gyeongju to tour museums, enjoy the bustling night life, visit historic temples and palaces, and, of course, taste delicious Korean food!

Kenya (ENV 320/CM 211)

Winterim: January 3 – 17, 2025

Join us on this experiential learning trip to explore nature conservation and cultural diversity in Kenya. Located in East Africa, Kenya is renowned for its unique habitats and the diversity of its wildlife, including the famous Serengeti Migration—one of the seven Wonders of the Natural World. In this trip, students will learn from local experts about the animals, their habitats, ecotourism, conflicts between humans and wildlife, and the cultural diversity of the Kenyan people. We will hike in game parks, observe wildlife interactions, and hang out with the “Big Five” (lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, and African buffalo) in their natural environments. Students will be immersed in the culture of Kenya through traditional dances, and learn about intercultural communication through artistry and homestead architecture. This trip will truly impact the way you see the natural world and function as a global citizen.

Dominican Republic (CHS 250/SVC 101)

Winterim: January 4 – 12, 2025

Meaningful. Sustainable. Unforgettable. As you travel across the Dominican Republic, take a cultural journey into the local communities of the northern coast. While you’re immersed in the local heritage, you’ll gain insight into the issues impacting local children today. Working together with local non-profits and community members, you’ll build sustainable solutions to the educational, social and economic challenges they face. Themes include, access to education, youth development and generational poverty.

FAQ

Health and Safety

Your safety and well-being is of primary importance when particpating in a study abroad program. While we cannot guarantee your safety – at home or overseas – we take specific precautions to help minimize the risks associated with travel: careful vetting of program providers and international partners; pre-departure and on-site orientations with a docus on health and safety; monitoring security reports from the State Department, CDC, World Health Organization, and others; and comprehensive international medical and evacuation insurance for all SU students abroad.

Eligibiliy

Any Âé¶čapp student can apply to study abroad as long as you meet stated requirements for your program. You may not be on academic or disciplinary probation and must be at least 18 years old by the departure date of your program.
